Recasting The Breakfast Club With Modern Actors

The Breakfast Club is John Hughes' iconic 1985 drama about five very different high school students on Saturday detention. As Kaya Plaka noted in her review, this film "has enough emotion to leave a sweet taste in your mouth without overwhelming you with kitsch." Maybe that's why The Breakfast Club is still discussed and watched. Oddly enough, this is a timeless classic enjoyed by different generations. There has been much debate over whether this classic should be remade. In fact, Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald, who played John and Claire respectively, said that a remake of The Breakfast Club wouldn't work for different reasons.

That being said, The Breakfast Club could have benefited from a remake as the film had some toxic footage. Ringwald openly states that the way John "sexually pursues Claire in the film" is deeply disturbing. Therefore, the change can fix these errors. The question is who should play whom?

Carl Reid - Christian Bale

Carl's character may not be seen much in the film, but his short screen time allows him to prove how smart he is. Carl, played by John Kapelas, is a janitor at the high school and seems to be the only adult who can relate to what these teenagers are feeling. He seems to know all the worries and secrets and is a fly on the wall. Carl's friendship with Brian is definitely a good thing because it allows the focus to be on Carl's more thoughtfulness. The most important thing about Karl is that he is the counterpart of the main antagonist of the film, the respected director Richard Vernon. Christian Bale may have played psychopaths and villains before, but he's proven himself to be a kinder and more sympathetic actor. Given how similar Carl's facial features are to Bale's, he might be the perfect actor for the role.

Richard Vernon, Ralph Fiennes

Like Paul Gleason, Vernon is the bully king. Taking care of high school students sounds like fun. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Vernon is not only a man of power, but also a villain. The way he arrests and threatens John shows how he uses his power to torture these teenagers. It also seems that Verno himself is breaking the rules to make these students suffer. Everything is done in order to respect force. If Ralph Fiennes is a talented actor who can perfectly portray the cold nature of villains, then he could be the perfect Richard Vernon. Interestingly, Fiennes is known for his role as Voldemort in the Harry Potter series , where he has to terrorize a high school student. It also shows that Chef Slavik's character is able to suppress his human emotions in the kitchen and continue his cold demeanor. So Fiennes can create a more powerful and tyrannical Richard Vernon.

Alison Stephanie Hsu

Alison was considered a "hopeless case" and painted as a social misfit. He hides his face under his hair, wears black and looks salty. Alison didn't edit as the film progressed, and she was there because she had nothing else to do. Although her parents ignore her, Alison tries to escape and ends up with her bag full of clothes and many other things. It is interesting that this particular character does not speak at first, but gradually begins to participate in the conversation. It's sad to see Andre walk into the "perfect woman" at the end of the movie so he can figure it out. She is played by Ellie Sheedy, who does a great job portraying the "crazy" Alison. Stephanie Hsu could have done a good job as Alison, as she suddenly found herself a bit of a rebel in everything, anywhere . Hsu is an underrated actor who can definitely pull off any serious role.

Andrew-Tom Holland

Andrew is an "athlete" so he is a typical high school athlete. Rape of someone else's "weak" child is grounds for arrest. However, he reveals that the only reason he is a bully is to gain his father's approval, which worries Andreas. Tom Holland does a modern remake of Andrew that is perfect for so many reasons. Holland previously played a high school student in the series about Spider-Man . Peter Parker's kindness can easily be transferred to Andrew's performance. As for Jack, Holland is known for such films as "Cherry" and "Charter" . These films allowed Holland to portray physically strong characters, which resulted in Andrew's physical strength. Andrew was originally played by Emilio Estevez.

Claire is Anya Taylor Joy

Originally played by Molly Ringwald, Claire is the typical "princess" or popular high school girl. He is very focused on his looks and his "real and decent" personality, and he comes from a wealthy background. But like the other four, Claire has a complicated relationship with her parents. In the film, she seems to have a complicated relationship with John, and they end up together. Unfortunately, this relationship itself is very toxic, as John always makes her uncomfortable. Anya Taylor-Joy can do justice to Claire by adding a more feminine look to the character. Taylor-Joy played strong female roles standing up to male bullies. In addition, her appearance and personality are able to capture the image of Claire's mix.

Brian Lucas Hedges

Brian appears to be a star student who excels academically. However, he himself cannot pass the "workshop", so he fights on his own. Brian, played by Anthony Michael Hall, is the "brains" of the group. Brian was arrested for attempting to take his own life by "shooting" himself during a search of the store. Fortunately, the group allows Brian to be vulnerable and enjoy prison. After all, it is he who is introduced as the film's narrator and magnanimous character. Lucas Hedges would be the best Brian, as he once played a good and innocent boy in Lady Bird . His shy exterior makes it easy for him to win people's hearts.

John Austin Butler

John, the "criminal" of the group, probably has a very difficult family life. This made him "strong" which made him hurt others. John is constantly fighting with Vernon, and for good reason. He is a hero who is suppressed by adults, so the audience immediately sympathizes with him. The way he attacks Claire and hurts others like Brian makes the audience hate him for some of his actions. This is how Judd Nelson was able to create a complex relationship between John and the audience. Given that Austin Butler had already demonstrated his ability to take on difficult roles as Elvis Presley in Elvis, the beloved and hated character of John was the perfect balance.
